I have had a weight problem for as long as I can remember. I first tried diet pills in high school. Then I tried the grapefruit diet. Then I tried the apple diet. Then I tried several of the popular fad diets. Nothing worked. As a biology student at SFSU, I was forced to become aware of the world’s eco issues. The population was exploding, and our natural resources were dwindling. The rain forests were being destroyed at the rate of an acre per second. While the government promoted programs to prevent AIDS and global warming, health care reform was failing. As the planet grew sicker and its human inhabitants grew heavier, my thoughts of worry and doom grew larger. What will the world be like for my child? And for her children? My body responded to my worried mind by gaining body fat, and developing skin rashes, allergies, and full-blown asthma. I couldn’t sleep. And I literally couldn’t breathe anymore. I depended on six different medications to live.

After multiple failed attempts to find a cure via conventional methods, I decided to stray from my pre-med mindset and take a holistic approach. First, I had to heal my head, heart, and soul. I canceled all of my newspaper and magazine subscriptions. I canceled cable. I learned how to meditate, which inadvertently taught me how to be alone, but not lonely. I took up yoga. And, I severed all my relationships that no longer served me. I booked teaching salsa every night of the week to provide my primary source of income and primary form of exercise. (I’m not recommending going out salsa dancing every night. That’s just what worked for me at the time.) This enabled me to work nights, become financially independent, and keep my days free for my precious daughter. My body, mind, and soul loved to salsa dance! I finally felt free in my own skin! As a result, the rashes disappeared, the fat melted away, and the “incurable” allergies and asthma miraculously vanished. Making wise food choices suddenly became instinctive. I stopped eating processed food-like, chemical-laden, hormone-infested crap, and started supporting local, family-owned businesses that provided fresh, organic, sustainable nutrition to the community. Water became my drink of choice.

Now, I wake up early, every day, energized. I try to meditate daily, but if I am pressed for time, I turn on violins or piano music, close my eyes, and take a few minutes to visualize what I am grateful for, starting with my partners in life—my family, my friends, my colleagues, and my students. I feel the gratitude in my heart. And I always thank God for my good health. When I don’t have time to cook breakfast, I blend my enzyme-active, undenatured whey protein IsaLean Shake; it is exclusively sourced from New Zealand grass-fed cows not treated with hormones or antibiotics. I always add a cup of frozen organic blueberries, and alternate between adding organic hemp seeds, chia seeds, or flax seed meal. It’s always a good idea to indulge every once in a while too!

The Moral of the Story: Total body mind nutrition is necessary to achieve optimum health. You need to stop. Take a deep breath. Notice how you feel. Scrutinize what you put into your mouth. Pay attention to what comes out of it too. Words are powerful. Use them gently. Forgive. Hate only hurts the hater. Keep a peaceful mind. Get some sleep. Listen to soothing music. Watch inspirational videos. Spend more time with the people you love, and those who love you. Visualize your intended outcome for your body, your life. And remember this: In prayer we speak to God. In meditation God speaks to us. Pray. Meditate. Be grateful.

I had already been teaching salsa dancing for a few years, and had established what I believed to be a good system for learning. My classes were held at several different community centers and at Cañada College in Redwood City. My rules changed accordingly.

Most of the community center students were taking the class with their significant others for fun, while the community college students enrolled primarily to meet the degree requirement. As per government mandate, college students were expected to achieve certain learning outcomes. Although I recommended that switching partners was necessary, it was optional in my community center classes; it was mandatory in my college courses. I required that my college students switch partners, make eye contact, introduce themselves, shake hands, and be respectful and courteous to each other at all times.

Tom and Barbara were enrolled in one of my community center classes. Looking back, I think they enrolled as a last chance effort to revive their exhausted relationship. Tom insisted that he and Barbara not switch partners. Tom wasn’t confident leading. Why should he be? He was a beginner. Because of his insecurity and nervousness, he forced Barbara to dance with only him for the entire hour. The worst part was that they would constantly argue, complain about each other to me, and make the rest of the students feel uncomfortable with their out-loud rudeness and immaturity (and they were both in their mid-fifties!). In his frustration, Tom eventually ended up storming out of class after the third or fourth lesson, and Barbara reluctantly followed him out to their car. They didn’t come back.

Difficulties and frustration between partners may be minimized and/or prevented. I always explain the importance of switching partners on the first day of class. To lead, you need to learn to adjust to your partners’ abilities and disabilities, friendly or not-so-friendly faces, and wide variety of personality quirks. Leaders must develop confidence, which cannot possibly be accomplished by practicing with only one partner. To follow, you need to learn to adjust to the strength or weakness of the lead, which may be accompanied by a good or bad attitude, and good or bad breath, or body odor! Followers must learn to let go of the idea of leading. (I know… it was the hardest thing for me to do too!) Followers must learn to wait for the lead, not only because it is polite and correct, but because it may also help prevent injury. Learning to follow requires practicing with a variety of different partners.

For leaders and followers alike, insecurity and nervousness dissipates over time with consistent practice, and perfection develops with multiple partners. For your own good, you will be required to switch partners! Questions, comments, and criticisms won’t be focused on only one person for the entire duration of class if you adhere to the rule of switching partners. And know that if you did come to class as a couple, and you want to leave as a happy couple, it’s best to switch partners!

The Moral of the Story: Throughout our lifetime, we are constantly switching partners—at work, at home, in school, at the gym, on the dance floor, everywhere! It may be exciting for some of us, but it may be a little scary for some of us too. Change affects us in peculiar ways. We are all unique. We have all experienced death, divorce, disease, and general dissatisfaction with some aspect of our lives, and it affects all of us differently. Rather than dwell on what we do not like and cannot change, shift your focus on what is great about your partners in life. Focus on what you appreciate about your partners. Focus on what you can do to improve your partnerships. Handle your partners with care. Be considerate.

My First Time

I hadn’t seen my friend Alisa since high school graduation. I was picking up some last-minute school supplies at a local stationery store at Woodside Plaza, a strip mall in my hometown of Redwood City, California. She was rushing out of the store as I was rushing in. We exchanged hellos and quickly hugged. As we were talking and walking backward, hanging on our last goodbyes, she asked if I wanted to go salsa dancing. I was just about to finally graduate with my BS in Cell and Molecular Biology from SFSU. It seemed like it had been taking an eternity to finish. I was a total stress case. To pay for school (and living), I was teaching tap, ballet, jazz, acrobatics, and science to children. I had just discovered my first grey hair. My daughter was an energetic toddler. Her father and I were having the same recurring relationship problems that most new families encountered, and I didn’t have an outlet to relieve my relentless stress. My grueling schedule was about to come to a screeching stop. Heck yes! I want to go salsa dancing!

Of course, I decided to wear a little black party dress. Alisa picked me up and we drove up to The City. On a crowded dance floor of a renovated San Francisco home basement studio, I took my very first beginner salsa lesson. The instructor directed all the leaders to one side of the room, and all the followers to the opposite side. I was naively standing there in my stupid dress along side a group of men in pants. The instructor glared at me as if I would understand “the look” but I didn’t get it. He had to tell me, “You’re a follower,” and he motioned toward the group of women on the other side of the room. Ouch! I think he hurt my feelings! Or did he just bruise my ego? My heels, alone, clicked across the floor as the rest of the class impatiently waited. I was in shock. My mind raced. I am not a follower. I have never been a follower. I am a leader. I have always been a leader. What is this guy’s problem? He doesn’t know me! Then it hit me. I have to let the leader lead, and intentionally learn how to follow. The idea of following seemed to go against everything my immigrant mother had taught me about being a woman in this great country. Following was wrong. I knew I had a major challenge on my plate. This is going to be hard. This is going to be harder than running the gas chromatograph. This is going to be more difficult than interpreting DNA gels. Omg! I have to learn to follow!

The Moral of the Story: The first time doing virtually anything may be awkward and uncomfortable for anybody. Everyone has a story. We all have secret dreams. We all have secret worries. We all experience relationships that don’t always work out exactly as we had wished or expected. We all have hearts that have been bruised or broken. We can all afford to take more responsibility for our own thoughts, words, and actions. Humans are fragile. Be nice.
