I have had a weight problem for as long as I can remember. I first tried diet pills in high school. Then I tried the grapefruit diet. Then I tried the apple diet. Then I tried several of the popular fad diets. Nothing worked. As a biology student at SFSU, I was forced to become aware of the world’s eco issues. The population was exploding, and our natural resources were dwindling. The rain forests were being destroyed at the rate of an acre per second. While the government promoted programs to prevent AIDS and global warming, health care reform was failing. As the planet grew sicker and its human inhabitants grew heavier, my thoughts of worry and doom grew larger. What will the world be like for my child? And for her children? My body responded to my worried mind by gaining body fat, and developing skin rashes, allergies, and full-blown asthma. I couldn’t sleep. And I literally couldn’t breathe anymore. I depended on six different medications to live.
After multiple failed attempts to find a cure via conventional methods, I decided to stray from my pre-med mindset and take a holistic approach. First, I had to heal my head, heart, and soul. I canceled all of my newspaper and magazine subscriptions. I canceled cable. I learned how to meditate, which inadvertently taught me how to be alone, but not lonely. I took up yoga. And, I severed all my relationships that no longer served me. I booked teaching salsa every night of the week to provide my primary source of income and primary form of exercise. (I’m not recommending going out salsa dancing every night. That’s just what worked for me at the time.) This enabled me to work nights, become financially independent, and keep my days free for my precious daughter. My body, mind, and soul loved to salsa dance! I finally felt free in my own skin! As a result, the rashes disappeared, the fat melted away, and the “incurable” allergies and asthma miraculously vanished. Making wise food choices suddenly became instinctive. I stopped eating processed food-like, chemical-laden, hormone-infested crap, and started supporting local, family-owned businesses that provided fresh, organic, sustainable nutrition to the community. Water became my drink of choice.
Now, I wake up early, every day, energized. I try to meditate daily, but if I am pressed for time, I turn on violins or piano music, close my eyes, and take a few minutes to visualize what I am grateful for, starting with my partners in life—my family, my friends, my colleagues, and my students. I feel the gratitude in my heart. And I always thank God for my good health. The Moral of the Story: Total body mind nutrition is necessary to achieve optimum health. You need to stop. Take a deep breath. Notice how you feel. Scrutinize what you put into your mouth. Pay attention to what comes out of it too. Words are powerful. Use them gently. Forgive. Hate only hurts the hater. Keep a peaceful mind. Get some sleep. Listen to soothing music. Watch inspirational videos. Spend more time with the people you love, and those who love you. Visualize your intended outcome for your body, your life. And remember this: In prayer we speak to God. In meditation God speaks to us. Pray. Meditate. Be grateful.
